Yesterday was another wonderful day. We celebrated Kage’s second birthday with my family. It was small, intimate, simple and just right. Those people that loved him the most were here to celebrate his turning two.
First thing in the morning, I cleared off our buffet and set up Kage’s birthday table. I pulled out the birthday ring which now has a second candle as well as a few more ornaments and set it up next to Kage’s birth picture. This photo was taken just a few hours after his birth. How he has grown.
I also set out his new birthday crown (that I just finished late the night before) and some favorite photos of him from the past two years.
The new family birthday banner was hung.
Then in the early afternoon my family came over to begin the celebration. The adults chatted while I cooked and the kids played. After we shared a meal together, we opened his presents. He liked his new winter books and I can’t wait to read them with him. They will be even more fun to read since we just got so much snow. Now he will understand what the snow and cold are all about as we read through the stories.
He LOVED his new truck. You should have seen the grin on his face when he realized what it was. Do I dare say he is ALL boy? He jumped down and started zooming around the house to try it out.
The truck is handmade by Bill Tansley, grandfather of twelve, and owner of Cars From Papa. Each car is unique, one of a kind, and just beautiful. I love being able to support small businesses like Bill’s. Check out his store if you are needing gifts for the holidays. He has some adorable toys in stock right now.
After he enjoyed his new toys for a minute, we pulled out his birthday cake which Bruce got for him. He was so excited to see a Tiger! Kage’s lovey is a tiger who has become quite an important part of our lives. Every night when I put the kids to sleep and turn out the lights, I tell a story about Tiger’s adventures. His favorite and most requested story is the one where Tiger goes to the beach. This one developed after our trip to the beach this summer.
We ended the celebration with a birthday song and wishes for another wonderful year ahead.

Happy Birthday, you beautiful boy!
I cried the first time we cut Samuel’s hair – I wasn’t ready! But both my boys have so much hair, it was getting a little ridiculous. Dixon had a mullet, right from the start; Samuel’s hair turned big-boy thick shortly after his first birthday and quickly became a mop that covered his eyes.
Kage still has the beautiful fine curls of an infant. No need to bring scissors into the picture!
I am sure I will cry when we do eventually cut his hair. I seem to cry at all their milestones though. Thanks for the birthday wishes.
PS. I’d like to send some mail to you, but don’t have your address. Could you e-mail it to me?
xoxo,
B
I’ll send it to you but you have to send me yours!
I’ll show you mine…
Check your e-mail box.
Happy 2nd Birthday, Kage!!!
The cake and crown and banner looked so cool! I’d love to know how you made the crown and banner!
Thanks Laura. I will post some links for tutorials on both the crown and banner today. I can always come by and help you too. (And get some newborn snuggles in while I am there.)
Michelle, your posts are always wonderful and your photos breathtaking. But this one made me tear up. My sweet big boy turned two in September and it made (makes?) me so sad that he’s growing so fast. I try so hard to do what your blog is called: live slowly. But sometimes Father Time just flies by me. Never faster now that kids are here.
(LOVE the crown and banner. Such a great idea!)
I know, I have been struggling with the same things. I try so hard to be in the moment, to watch them both just be who they are and enjoy their babyhood because it is going by so very fast. In a way, I don’t want him to grow up because I love how he is right now (tantrums and all!). I already have a hard time remembering many of the details from his first year and can’t imagine how much I will have forgotten in another ten years. I think that is why I have become almost obsessed with photographing them all the time. At least I will have photos later on to remind me of all their sweet baby years once my memory has started to fail.
Oh how very special. The birthday banner and the little one’s crown are just perfect. Hope you all had a wonderful day
Thanks Heather. It was a wonderful day.
Hi Michelle – I’ve been following your blog for a short while, and just wanted to let you know I really enjoy it, and LOVE the birthday crown. I made a family birthday banner a couple of weeks ago that is similar – I love introducing these traditions, makes it more special and memorable for all!
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog site. I am glad you enjoy it. That is great you have a birthday banner also!
You are so great with the crafting. The banner and crown turned out great! I can feel in your writing how much pleasure you took in creating the special day for your son. Happy Birthday Kage!
You are very right. These were really special projects for me.
Wow…i’m really impressed. I love the banner and the crown. Too cute!
Thanks!
This cake Looks DEVINE! YUM
